Longbridge Station is on Longbridge Lane, Longbridge, Birmingham, B31 2TW

In brief

The current Longbridge Station at Longbridge Station and Tessall Lane opened in 1978 on the Cross City Line, designed by architect John Broome. Two previous stations existed in Longbridge at other sites, the first in 1840 and another in 1915. On the 1978 station, two platforms were built on a four track line. The line through the station was electrified in 1993. Since 2018 trains that used to terminate at Longbridge continue to Bromsgrove. A new station building was built at Longbridge Lane in 2018, it opened by July 2019. There were no other changes to the platform's or footbridge etc. Class 323 Electric Multiple Units on the Cross City Line. Trains every 10 minutes towards Four Oaks and Lichfield. Every 20 minutes to Redditch or Bromsgrove. Half-hourly service on Sunday's.

The station building

All station buildings that opened on the Cross City Line in 1978 were designed by John Broome. That was the case at Longbridge. But it was rebuilt between 2018 and 2019.

The footbridge dates to 1978 and it used to have two sets of steps. But passengers arriving from Birmingham New Street now used a ramp to get to the station building. The steps for passengers going to Birmingham and Lichfield is still in use, with a lift.

February 2019

Construction of the new Longbridge Station building at Longbridge Lane was well underway. The station remained open throughout the works.

Inside the old ticket hatch was closed, the last you would see of the 1978 bricks from the inside (they remained on the outside at the back).

July 2019

The new station building at Longbridge was completed and open by the summer of 2019. A much better impression of the station if arriving from Longbridge Town Centre.

Class 323's

Until 2018, trains that didn't go to Redditch terminated at Longbridge. After the electrification to Bromsgrove was completed, formerly terminating Longbridge services continued to Bromsgrove.

Under London Midland until December 2017, Longbridge terminating services would head a bit down the line and return at the opposite platform, forming a service to Lichfield City.

Since West Midlands Railway took over, services alternate from Longbridge to either Redditch or Bromsgrove.

The Genie of Industry

Outside of Longbridge Station and near the bus stops on Longbridge Lane is a steel metal bashed sculpture by John McKenna called the Genie of Industry. It sits on top of the Longbridge Interchange. Made in the early 2000s.  It is close to the bus stop for the 19, 27, 45, 47 and 49 bus routes. It used to be on the other side of the road (near the lights), but was relocated in 2014, after a refurbishment of the interchange area outside of the station, which included a new Cycle Hub.
